Davey Johnson calls Washington, D.C., a ?baseball town?

The NL East-leading Washington Nationals are among baseball?s biggest surprises and are the toast of the town. So much so that manager Davey Johnson is calling D.C. a baseball town.

?I like challenges and this is a challenge to put Washington on the map. It?s a baseball town, not a football town,? Johnson told MLB Network.

Among the other challenges Johnson is facing: Right fielder Jayson Werth (hip), left fielder Mike Morse (lat) and closer Drew Storen (elbow) are on the disabled list, and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman could be headed there because of a shoulder injury.

But the team has continued to excel because of its excellent starting pitching. The Nationals? 1.72 rotation ERA is the best in the majors by almost a run.

Prior to the season, Johnson made headlines by saying he should be fired if the Nationals fail to reach the postseason. And he isn?t backing off those comments.

?The talent is here. If we play up to our potential, we?ll win,? Johnson told MLB Network. ?It?s that simple and it?s my job to make it easy for them to play up to their potential. And if I don?t do that, then I?ve failed. I?ve been fired a few other times so it won?t be the first (time).?
