'I don't want to live': Families mourn 7 killed in Bronx crash

A man is mourning the deaths of his wife, daughter and five other family members who were killed when their SUV plunged off an overpass near New York City's Bronx Zoo. NBC's Jeff Rossen reports.

By Brynn Gingras, NBCNewYork.com

Updated at 1:21 p.m. --Three generations of a family died in a crash? just a few miles from home when the SUV they were traveling in plunged more than 50 feet off a highway overpass and into a ravine on the grounds of the Bronx Zoo, killing all seven aboard, including three children.?

Authorities were trying to determine what caused Sunday's accident that killed Jacob Nunez, 85, and Ana Julia Martinez, 81, both from the Dominican Republic, their daughters, Maria Gonzalez, 45, and Maria Nunez, 39, and three grandchildren. Police say Gonzalez was driving.

Her husband of 22 years, Juan Gonzalez, said in the five years Maria had her license she never had any incidents behind the wheel. The last time he spoke to his 10-year-old daughter, Jazlyn, one of the three children who died in the accident, she asked him to bring home milk, he said.

"I don't want to live anymore. I want to die," Juan Gonzalez said.

The other children who died were identified as Niely Rosario, 7, and Marly Rosario, 3, both daughters of Nunez.

Nunez's husband, Juan Ramon Rosario, said in Spanish Monday that he was numb.?

His cousin, who translated, quoted him as saying, "He can't think, he can't feel ... It's like death."

'Horrific'
The 2004 Honda Pilot was headed south on the Bronx River Parkway when it bounced off the median, crossed three southbound lanes and hit the curb, causing the vehicle to become airborne, continue over the guardrail and plunge 59 feet, police said.

Relatives said the grandparents had arrived from the Dominican Republic three days earlier. They had 13 children, six of whom live in the United States. They were headed to a family party when the accident occurred.

"Sometimes you come upon events that are horrific and this is one of them," FDNY deputy Chief Ronald Werner said shortly after the crash.?

The cause of the crash, which happened around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, was unclear. A city official said the guardrail's height would be one of the safety issues investigated.?

"Obviously, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed," Werner said. "It hit something that caused it to become airborne."

The SUV landed in a wooded area on the edge of zoo property that's closed to the public and far from any animal exhibits, zoo spokeswoman Mary Dixon said. The vehicle lay mangled hours later, its right doors ripped off and strewn amid the trees along with items from the car. Next to the heavily wooded area are subway tracks and a train yard.

Werner said that it doesn't appear that any other vehicles were involved in the accident.?

Police said all the victims were wearing seat belts.?

The medical examiner's office said it expected to release the victims' causes of death on Monday.?

The accident was the second in the past year where a car fell off the same stretch of the Bronx River Parkway. Last June, the driver of an SUV heading north lost control and the SUV hit a divider, bounced through two lanes of traffic and fell 20 feet over a guardrail, landing on a truck in a parking lot. The two people in the SUV were injured.

The wreck was the deadliest in New York City since the driver of a tour bus returning from a Connecticut casino in March 2011 lost control and slammed into a pole that sheared the bus nearly end to end, killing 14 passengers.?

Rick Santorum Denies Taking Photo of Lindsay Lohan

Does Rick Santorum have a crush on Lindsay Lohan?

The former presidential candidate reportedly asked the actress to pose for a photo at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, then awkwardly denied it.

Lohan was sitting with Greta Van Susteren, whose invitation to the star drew fire from Meghan McCain, at the annual event when Santorum approached.

He reportedly asked Lindsay to take a picture of him with Van Susteren, then snapped a photo of Lohan. Not along with him, just a photo of Lohan. Alone.

Lindsay Looking SoberRick Santorum Photo

Random? Sure. But probably harmless. The funny part is that when asked about this by a reporter shortly after, he dodged the question unnecessarily.

"I took a picture of a lot of people tonight," the visibly uncomfortable politician said, as though he could not remember what happened minutes earlier.

It's really okay Rick. You're allowed to be a little enamored with this sultry, captivating, slow-moving train wreck of an individual. We clearly are.

Santorum dropped out of the Republican presidential race this month, having given Mitt Romney an impressively strong run considering that he's Rick Santorum.

Rangers?snap Rays' 6-game winning streak

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:22 p.m. ET April 28, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ron Washington said before Saturday night's game that Colby Lewis was the leader of the team's pitching stuff.

The right-hander showed exactly why he has earned that title from his manager.

Lewis gave up one run in six innings and Texas snapped Tampa Bay's six-game winning streak, beating the Rays 7-2.

The Rays had a season-high 16 hits and hit a pair of home runs to beat the Rangers 8-4 in the series opener Friday night.

Lewis helped make sure Texas rebounded from that shaky performance.

"If we're consistent on the mound, we're going to win ballgames with our lineup," said Lewis, who allowed three hits and three walks. "I just try to go out and throw zeroes and keep our team in the game."

Josh Hamilton had a two-run single in the first and Adrian Beltre hit a three-run home run in the seventh to support Lewis (3-0), who improved to 4-0 in his career against the Rays.

Matt Joyce provided the only offense off Lewis, hitting a solo home run in the second.

The Rangers improved to 16-5 to equal their best 21-game start in club history. They are the only team in the majors who has not lost consecutive games this season.

"Colby did a great job," Washington said. "We kept grinding and then we had a big inning."

Rays starter Jeff Niemann (1-3) gave up three runs and three walks in 5 2-3 innings. The right-hander has not pitched past the sixth inning in his four starts this season.

Tampa Bay had been on its longest winning streak in a single season since a seven-game run July 24-30, 2010.

"You're not going to win every game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "I'm sorry folks, it just doesn't happen that way."

Ian Kinsler walked to start the game and advanced to third on Elvis Andrus' double to right. Hamilton, who hit his American League-leading ninth home run Friday, lifted a single to shallow left to put the Rangers on top 2-0 in the first.

Hamilton went 2 for 3 and now leads the AL with 24 RBIs.

"They've been throwing me soft stuff," Hamilton said of his early base hit. "He threw a heater. I was a little late, but it got the job done."

Lewis, who gave up his first walk in 25 2-3 innings, made sure that early lead held up until Texas' offense got rolling.

Other than Joyce's home run, Evan Longoria's 40-foot dribbler down the third-base line in the first was the only other hit off Lewis through five innings.

Carlos Pena singled leading off the sixth before he was erased on Longoria's double play grounder.

Lewis, who had walked only one batter in his first four starts, struck out five. Texas' opening day starter lowered his ERA to 1.93.

"It's the same thing he's had so much success doing all his career," Joyce said. "It's changing speeds, keeping hitters off-balance and really locating his pitches."

Hamilton scored an unearned run in the sixth when shortstop Elliot Johnson mishandled Nelson Cruz's grounder.

After Mitch Moreland scored on Jose Molina's throwing error in the seventh, the Rays elected to intentionally walk Hamilton. That set the stage for Beltre's three-run blast to right off reliever Burke Badenhop.

Tampa Bay's bullpen had not given up an earned run in its last 16 innings coming into the game.

Notes: The Rangers signed RHP Justin Miller to a minor-league deal Saturday. Miller had just been released by the club Monday. ... Longoria had an RBI double in the eighth. That gives him 105 RBIs in his last 119 games dating to last season. ... The game drew a season-high 49,197 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. It was the team's fifth straight sellout and seventh of the season.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: biophotovoltaic table, giant rubber ducky and cushions of shredded cash

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

Buon giorno! Milan Design Week 2012 is in the rear-view mirror now, but we're still sifting through the incredible furniture, lighting and technology that was showcased all throughout the city this year. Inhabitat sent a couple of correspondents to report on everything that was on display, and they didn't disappoint. We featured a nifty biophotovoltaic table that uses moss to generate electricity through photosynthesis. We also caught wind of a digital camera that IKEA unveiled in Milan that's made of cardboard. And given our love for terrariums, we were pretty excited to find this pendant lamp that doubles as a vegetable garden at this year's fair. But the star of the Milan show this year had to be British designer Tom Dixon, who rolled out countless innovative lamp designs, including the gorgeous Etch Light, which casts geometric shadows all over the room -- and he even invited visitors to design their own flat-pack lamps!

U.S. special forces help in hunt for warlord Kony

OBO, Central African Republic (AP) ? Deep in the jungle, this small, remote Central African village is farther from the coast than any point on the continent. It's also where three international armies have zeroed in on Joseph Kony, one of the world's most wanted warlords.

Obo was the first place in the Central African Republic that Kony's Lord's Resistance Army attacked in 2008; today, it's one of four forward operating locations where U.S. special forces have paired up with local troops and Ugandan soldiers to seek out Kony, who is believed likely to be hiding out in the rugged terrain northwest of the town. For seven years he has been wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity after his forces cut a wide and bloody swath across several central African nations with rapes, abductions and killings.

Part of the LRA's success in eluding government forces has been its ability to slip back and forth over the porous borders of the Central African Republic, South Sudan and Congo. But since late last year, U.S. forces have been providing intelligence, looking at patterns of movement, and setting up better communications to link the countries' forces together so that they can better track the guerrilla force.

Sent by President Barack Obama at the end of 2011, the 100 U.S. soldiers are split up about 15 to 30 per base, bringing in American technology and experience to assist local forces.

Exact details on specific improvements that the American forces have brought to the table, however, are classified, to avoid giving Kony the ability to take countermeasures.

"We don't necessarily go and track into the bush but what we do is we incorporate our experiences with the partner nation's experiences to come up with the right solution to go out and hopefully solve this LRA problem," said Gregory, a 29-year-old captain from Texas, who would only give his first name in accordance with security guidelines.

The U.S. troops also receive reports from local hunters and others that they help analyze together with surveillance information.

"It's very easy to blame everything on the LRA but there are other players in the region ? there are poachers, there are bandits, and we have to sift that to filter what is LRA," he said.

Central African Republic soldiers largely conduct security operations in and around the town, while Ugandan soldiers, who have been in the country since 2010, conduct longer-range patrols looking for Kony and his men.

Since January, they have killed seven LRA fighters in the area and captured one, while rescuing 15 people abducted by the group including five children, said their local commander, Col. Joseph Balikuddembe.

There has been no contact with the LRA since March, however, according to Ugandan Army spokesman Col. Felix Kulayigye, who said the LRA now is in survival mode. The LRA is thought to today number only around 150 to 300 die-hard fighters.

"They're hiding," he said. "They are not capable of doing."

But with Kony still around, there are wide ranging-fears that the LRA will be able to rebuild.

"There's periods of time when the LRA will lie low when the military pressure is too high or where there's a threat that they don't understand such as the American intervention," said Matthew Brubacher, a political affairs officer with the U.N.'s mission in Congo, who was also an International Criminal Court investigator on the Kony case for five years.

"But then after a while after they figure it out, if they have the opportunity they'll try to come back, so it's just a matter of time they'll try to come back. Kony always said 'if I have only 10 men, I can always rebuild the force."

Right now, expectations are high of the Americans serving in Obo and Djema in the Central African Republic, as well as those in Dungu in Congo and Nzara in South Sudan.

"For all the communities, the U.S. bases in Obo and Djema means one, Kony will be arrested, and two, there will be a lot of money for programs, humanitarian programs," said Sabine Jiekak of the Italian humanitarian aid agency Coopi.

Central African Republic Deputy Defense Minister Jean Francis Bozize said it's been difficult for the poor country's small military to deal with Kony in the southeast as well as several other militant groups in the north.

An African Union mission expected to begin later this year should help expedite the cross-border pursuit of the LRA.

In the meantime, Bozize said the American forces could make a big difference.

"The involvement of U.S. forces with their assistance in providing information and intelligence will allow for all forces to operate from the same base-level of intelligence ... (giving) better coordination with better results," he told reporters in the capital, Bangui.

But the military mission is not a simple one.

How do you find small groups of seasoned fighters hidden deep in the jungle, who have eluded authorities for decades? How do you prevent brutal reprisal attacks on civilians? How can you bring together several countries' troops to cooperate on cross-border pursuits?

The LRA usually attacks late at night, then melts back away into the jungle. Seasoned bush fighters, they employ many techniques to elude pursuit ? walking along rocks or along streams to avoid leaving tracks, for example, and sometimes even marching backward to fool trackers.

Kony has reportedly stopped using radios and satellite phones for communications, instead relying on an elaborate system involving runners and multiple rendezvous points.

Key to his capture is good information from local residents ? which they will only give when they can be sure of their own safety, according to American commanders.

"The population have to believe that they are secure and once they believe they are secure from the LRA, you start to deny the LRA the opportunity to attack villages to get people, to get food, to get medicine," Gen. Carter Ham, the head of U.S. Africa Command, told reporters in Stuttgart.

That may take some time in Obo, a town of some 15,000 where around 3,500 people have sought refuge to escape LRA violence in the area.

Rural farmers and others stick to within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of the village for safety ? originally the area that Central African Republic soldiers were able to patrol but now more a rule of thumb followed by the locals.

They've started recently to venture out farther, emboldened by the presence of the Ugandans and Americans to help the government forces, but are too nervous to stray too wide from the safety of the village.

"They're still scared, they're still wary because Joseph Kony is still out there," said Mayor Joseph Kpioyssrani, looking at the jungle behind him.

Kony's LRA sprung up in 1986 as a rebel movement among the Acholi people in northern Uganda to fight against the Kampala government, but has for decades been leading its violent campaign without any clear political ideology.

Emmanuel Daba, 33, was one of 76 people abducted in the first LRA raid on Obo in 2008 and forced to fight for the guerrillas for two years before managing to escape.

"We were trained to kill ? forced to kill ? otherwise we'd be killed ourselves," he said outside the tiny radio station where he now works broadcasting messages to try and encourage others with the LRA to defect or escape. "I still have dreams ? nightmares."

This year, the U.S. Defense Department is committing $35 million to efforts to find and fight Kony.

Since 2008, the U.S. State Department has sent some $50 million in funds to support the Ugandan military's logistics and non-lethal operations against the LRA, including contracting two transport helicopters to ferry troops and supplies. Another $500 million has been given over that time for the broader northern Uganda recovery effort in the aftermath of Kony's presence there.

In Stuttgart, Ham keeps a "Kony 2012" poster hanging on his office door.

Though he isn't committing to the goal of the viral YouTube campaign to see Kony neutralized by the end of the year, he does define success as either capturing or killing the LRA leader eventually.

"I'm confident that the mission will be successful, but I can't give you a timeline when that's going to occur..." Ham said. "It is one of those organizations that if you remove the senior leader and the small number of those who surround him, I believe this is one of those organizations that will not be able to regenerate."

Alison van Diggelen: Can California Afford High Speed Rail? Jerry Brown Still Bullish, Likens it to Cathedral Building

Governor Jerry Brown responded to questions from Fresh Dialogues Tuesday about high speed rail and electric vehicles at the Silicon Valley Leadership Group's CEO Summit in Silicon Valley. Is he still an advocate for high speed rail in light of pressure, negative HSR reports and the sorry state of California's budget? The emphatic answer is: YES.

And he's got a historic precedent to support his case -- from Medieval France no less.

"It's a very powerful idea that could become something of great importance to California," he said. "New ideas are never received as well as old ideas, but I think California is the one place where high speed rail can get its start for the United States."

But with California's budget in the red and more spending cuts on the table, can California afford to spend a penny on high speed rail?

The 74-year-old governor took a page from history and replied with a question: "How did the peasants of medieval France afford to build the cathedral of Chartres?"

He then enlightened Fresh Dialogues with this answer, "They did it slowly... they did it with community investment and a great belief in the future."

This echoes Brown's 2012 State of the State Speech in which he said, "Those who believe that California is in decline will naturally shrink back from such a strenuous undertaking... I understand that feeling, but I don't share it because I know this state and the spirit of the people who choose to live here."

Governor Brown is thinking very long term. In fact, the high gothic Chartres Cathedral, famous for its flying buttresses, took almost 60 years to build.

But it's an unfortunate analogy. In the 13th Century, the cathedral's "free trade zone" was also the cause of bloody riots between bishops and civic authorities over tax revenues. An ominous sign indeed for the Governor of California. Plus ca change...

UK court tells service providers: Block Pirate Bay

(AP) ? Britain's High Court has ordered the country's Internet service providers to block file-sharing website The Pirate Bay, the U.K.'s main music industry association said Monday.

A High Court judge told Sky, Everything Everywhere, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media on Friday to prevent access to the Swedish site, which helps millions of people download copyrighted music, movies and computer games.

Music industry group BPI welcomed the order by justice Richard Arnold that the service providers block the site within the next few weeks.

BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor said sites like The Pirate Bay "destroy jobs in the U.K. and undermine investment in new British artists."

The service providers said they would comply with the order. A sixth provider, BT, has been given several weeks to consider its position, but BPI said it expected BT would also block the website.

Providers who refuse could find themselves in breach of a court order, which can carry a large fine or jail time.

Monday's announcement follows a February ruling by the same judge that the operators and users of The Pirate Bay have "a common design to infringe" the copyright of music companies.

The Pirate Bay has been a thorn in the side of the entertainment industry for years. In 2010, a Swedish appeals court upheld the copyright infringement convictions of three men behind the site, but it remains in operation.

The website, which has more than 20 million users around the world, does not host copyright-protected material itself, but provides a forum for its users to download content through so-called torrent files. The technology allows users to transfer parts of a large file from several different users, increasing download speeds.

Defenders of such sites say old creative industry business models have been overtaken by technology that allows music, movies and games to be acquired at the touch of a finger on computers, tablets, phones and other devices.

Both O2 and Virgin said banning orders against copyright-breaching sites had to be accompanied by other measures that reflected consumers' behavior.

O2 said in a statement that "music rights holders should continue to develop new online business models to give consumers the content they want, how they want it, for a fair price."

Collision suspected in yacht mishap that killed 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A yacht racing off the coasts of California and Mexico apparently collided at night with a much larger vessel, leaving three crew members dead and one missing, a sailing organization said Sunday. It was the state's second ocean racing tragedy this month.

The Newport Ocean Sailing Association ? organizer of the 125-mile (201-kilometer) Newport, California to Ensenada, Mexico yacht race ? said the apparent collision involving the 37-foot (11-meter) Aegean occurred late Friday or early Saturday several miles off the coast near the ocean border of the two countries.

"It appeared the damage was not inflicted by an explosion but by a collision with a ship much larger than the 37-foot vessel," association spokesman Rich Roberts said in a news release early Sunday.

Race officials believe there are few other possibilities for what caused the accident, Roberts later told The Associated Press, speaking by phone from Ensenada, Mexico.

He said details were still scarce but it was possible that if the smaller boat was bobbing around in light wind, the crew might not have been able to get out of the way of a larger ship, perhaps a freighter.

The race goes through shipping lanes and it's possible for a large ship to hit a sailboat and not even know it, especially at night, he said.

Roberts said a race tracking system indicated that the boat disappeared about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

A Coast Guard search turned up the boat's wreckage, including the rear transom with the boat's name on it, the association release said.

Three crew members of the sailboat were found dead and a search was under way early Sunday for a fourth. Coast Guard boats and two aircraft as well as Mexican navy and civilian vessels were involved.

It wasn't immediately clear how many people were aboard the Aegean, but the Newport Beach Patch website posted a photo that shows the crew at the start of the race Friday. Four men in royal blue T-shits are on the deck as the boat cuts through calm waters. One man is waving and another appears to be smiling.

Other yachts near the Coronado Islands in Mexico reported seeing debris Saturday morning. Searchers in the afternoon found the bodies and debris from the Aegean, whose home port is Redondo Beach, Coast Guard Petty Officer Henry Dunphy said

Two of the dead were recovered by a civilian boat, while the third was found by a Coast Guard helicopter.

The Coast Guard said earlier that it hadn't determined what happened to the sailboat.

Dunphy said conditions were fine for sailing, with good visibility and moderate ocean swells of 6-to-8 feet (1.8-to-2.4 meters).

A total of 210 boats were registered in the 65th annual yacht race, according to the Newport Ocean Sailing Association's website. The race started off Newport Beach Friday and many boats finished in Ensenada Saturday, with the last ones due in Sunday.

The association's commodore, reached by phone in Ensenada, told the AP that he didn't know the members of the Aegean or how many people were aboard.

"This has never happened in the entire 65 years of the race that I'm aware of," Chuck Iverson said. "We're all shocked by this whole event."

The names of the dead were not released pending notification of next of kin.

The Coronado Islands are four small, largely uninhabited islands about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of San Diego.

The deaths come two weeks after five sailors died in the waters off Northern California when their 38-foot yacht was hit by powerful waves, smashed into rocks and capsized during a race.

Three sailors survived the wreck and the body of another was quickly recovered. Four remained missing until one body was recovered last Thursday.

The deadly accident near the Farallon Islands, about 27 miles (43 kilometers) west of San Francisco, prompted the Coast Guard to temporarily stop races in ocean waters outside San Francisco Bay.

The Coast Guard said the suspension will allow it and the offshore racing community to study the accident and race procedures to determine whether changes are needed to improve safety. U.S. Sailing, the governing body of yacht racing, is leading the safety review, which is expected to be completed within the next month.

The Aegean is owned by Marina Sailing, a Southern California sailing club.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon renew wedding vows

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon say "I do" ? again.

A publicist for the pair says they renewed their vows Friday at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.

Spokeswoman Cindi Berger said the couple celebrated with an "intimate ceremony after a romantic dinner at the beautiful Jules Verne restaurant" just after midnight local time.

Carey, 42, and Cannon, 31, married in the Bahamas in 2008 after a whirlwind romance that began just months earlier. Carey gave birth to their twins, son and daughter Moroccan and Monroe, last April.

Cannon was hospitalized in January and later diagnosed with inflammation of the kidneys. He resigned from his New York City radio show in February to help his recovery. Earlier this month, he said he'd document his return to health on his website in a show called "NCredible Health Hustle."

How to Control Armadillos in Your Yard

Armadillos can become a nuisance in your lawn and garden in their constant search for their favorite food source, worms, insect larvae, pupae and other soil insects. The armadillo is fond of rooting and digging in leaf mold and other rich humus material containing high concentrations of insects. They can cause root damage to shrubs and trees by digging. In this article, we discuss ways to control armadillos in your yard.

The thing about armadillo's is that they have EXTREMELY keen noses. The olfactory portion of their brain is about a 1/3 of the total size of the cerebrum. This information can be useful to the DIY pest controller because anything that has a terrible odor can help keep an armadillo away from your garden. Some recommendations are mothballs, pine needles, urine (preferably that of a predator) or even cayenne pepper. You can even attempt using ammonia soaked rags placed around your garden.

Indirect control of the armadillo has been proven effective by eliminating as much of their food source by using a turf insecticide. When they are a constant problem in your garden then exclusion may be deemed necessary and is effective when done correctly.

Trapping and relocating armadillos is another effective technique to control the unwanted pests. Armadillos can be trapped in live animal traps, such as a Havahart animal trap. The size recommended is a 24"x8"x7" wire cage. The animal trap should be placed near the entrance to the den, burrows, or on trails next to fences and buildings. The Havahart trap can be made more effective by using two long boards on edge to form a funnel that herds the armadillo inside the animal trap.

Havahart animal trap can be baited with rotten fruit, such as pears, bananas and apples. Some people find that a small amount of ground meat or an egg is effective in some situations. Trapping can be a look and learn procedure, not all recommendations work for ever situation.

After you have trapped your armadillo, you will want to release it far away from your yard. To keep the armadillo gone, release him somewhere that he is too happy to leave. They like to be near water and a fair amount of brush for them to seek cover in. That is not to say that another armadillo will not someday wander back into your yard. But if you continue to remove much of their food source, and make the scents unappetizing, you will have a better chance of keep them out. The neighbor's yard will seem much more pleasant.

Once your visitor is removed, you should located the burrow and fill in the hole. First loosely cover the area and monitor it daily to make certain that you aren't trapping an animal underground. After several days of no activity, you can be fairly certain that all armadillos are gone and completely fill the den entrance with a combination of earth and pea gravel. The pea gravel will make it more difficult for another armadillo to enter.

Predictably named iPavement puts hotspots into the sidewalk

Image

We know what it's like to be in a foreign country without a mobile internet connection. Although there are domestic options making it easier to connect our devices abroad, Spanish company iPavement wants to help confused tourists (and their confused devices) by seamlessly integrating hotspots into tiles -- which are seamlessly integrated into the ground. It's unclear whether users will have open access to the entire world wide web, or only controlled info about the city, but the service is at least free to use. The 24kg (53lb) tiles are slightly larger than normal, installed a maximum of 20 meters (66 feet) from one another and only work at temperatures between -10 - 45 degrees Celsius (14 - 113 degrees Fahrenheit). Touristy cloud apps like maps, coupons, and traffic updates in various languages are also a part of the deal, and you would look like less of a tourist without that huge guide to Madrid. Just lose the fanny pack and you'll be set.

Fun. Ready To Burn Bright At MTV Movie Awards

'It's an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever,' band says of taking the Movie Awards stage on June 3.

Given that Fun. are the first musical act announced for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, you'd think they'd be privy to all sorts of insider info on the big show, like potential hosts, nominees, etc. But, you'd be wrong. Turns out, they're just as much in the dark as the rest of us.

"We haven't heard anything. Who's going to be there?" frontman Andrew Ruess laughed. "Jackie Chan? Jon Bon Jovi? They better be there, for sure."

Sadly, we can't vouch for either gentleman's availability on June 3, when the Movie Awards air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. But we can tell you that the guys in Fun. are planning on making the most of their time on stage, by going big with their performance of chart-topping smash "We Are Young."

"It's one of the most flattering things that's happened to us on this rollercoaster ride of this song and this album, because I just remember watching all those award shows — like the Video Music Awards and Movie Awards — and you always wonder like how they're doing it, what their big reveal is going to be, all those other type of things," Ruess said. "We've had meetings about how our set's going to be and what it's going to look like, and it's so exciting. It's so exciting how much effort MTV puts into this show, like, we have to show up and play the song, but they build this whole entire world around us, and it's so amazing."

"It's also an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever," guitarist Jack Antonoff added. "Like, I still talk about [the 2000 VMAs], when Eminem had the thousand people dressed like him, or when Smashing Pumpkins did 'Tonight, Tonight' [at the '96 VMAs] ... these are moments that, for us, growing up, last forever, and if we could pull off something like that, it would be amazing."

And as if being tapped to perform at the 2012 Movie Awards wasn't already a big enough deal for the band, there's also the fact that they've got previous MTV awards-show experience ... though, to be fair, this will be the first time they've actually been invited to attend.

"I went to the Video Music Awards when I was 14. My friend from camp had a friend who had a dad who was involved, and we sat near Rebecca Lobo and the Spice Girls," Antonoff said. "It was the year that Fiona Apple gave the big speech, which, in hindsight, was pretty inspiring. My mind was blown, and I thought 'This is just filled with famous people, and somehow I'm in the middle of it.' So, to be able to go back to an MTV awards show — not through a friend of a friend who has a dad who works at Viacom — but to actually be invited, is an honor."

The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

Romney shakes up the strategy, tones down rhetoric

Romney said, offering unusually measured remarks, even for the former businessman's standards, mentioning Obama by name only a handful of times. ?I will try and unite the American people, not divide us.? WESTERVILLE, Ohio (AP) ? Mitt Romney's Etch A Sketch moment is at hand.

Now that he's the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Romney is shifting away from the "red-meat" issues of abortion and immigration and instead holding more events highlighting his appeal as a regular guy.

The transformation played out Friday when he emerged publicly for the first time in days at a central Ohio university carrying a hamburger and fries in a Styrofoam container.

In a small room that featured more television cameras than students, Romney chatted about economic issues facing young people as he picked through his greasy lunch.

Romney's appearance at Otterbein University wasn't the full strategic shakeup from primary to general election that some Republicans feared, but it offered a glimpse into what aides say will be a shift in tone and focus in the coming weeks as Romney fights to deny President Barack Obama a second term.

He will favor more intimate settings, like the Ohio classroom, and a schedule that calls for fewer public appearances as the campaign hopes to show a softer side of the former Massachusetts governor who struggles at times to connect with average Americans. That's a dramatic difference from Obama, who feeds on large crowds and has scheduled his first formal campaign rallies for May 5.

While the Republican presidential contest has been raging for more than a year, the Romney campaign concedes that most general election voters haven't yet paid close attention. The campaign now sees an opportunity to reintroduce their candidate to the independents and moderate voters ? Hispanics and younger voters, among them ? who will ultimately help decide November's general election. His focus will shift to Obama's record, his own economic credentials and what aides call "inspirational themes."

"I'm absolutely convinced that this nation is the greatest nation on earth, and it is so because of the American people, a people who stand united when called upon by leaders to be united," Romney said at Otterbein University Friday, offering unusually measured remarks ? even for the former businessman's standards ? mentioning Obama by name only a handful of times. "I will try and unite the American people, not divide us."

But the stop at Otterbein University highlighted Romney's challenge: His style on the campaign trail is a study in contrasts.

Romney is almost constantly cracking jokes with the people around him ? whether they are governors or college students or his staff. He likes practical jokes and fast food, whether cameras are rolling or not. But he is at other times incredibly disciplined, refusing to take impromptu questions from reporters or wade into difficult subjects unprepared.

He often delivers remarks from a teleprompter ? an aid he's criticized Obama for using ? and he rarely displays emotion in public. Campaigning in Puerto Rico last month, he may have been the only person on a crowded stage not dancing.

Indeed, despite the preparation and years of practice, Romney sometimes transmits an awkwardness even in intimate settings.

"Congratulations," he said in between bites of a hamburger after Otterbein senior Jeff Fabus described his struggle to pay for college.

In more formal remarks to students later in the day, he raised some eyebrows after suggesting that students "take risks" ? and even borrow money from their parents ? to help improve their economic fortunes by finishing their education.

"This is kind of an American experience," he said.

But Romney's story is not typical of most Americans. Romney paid for his graduate education at Harvard University, in part, by selling stock that his father ? a former Michigan governor ? bought for him, Ann Romney told the Boston Globe in 1994.

Facing intensifying attacks from Democrats, however, Romney has fine-tuned a message to address such criticism, insisting that he will not apologize for his success. Expect that message to continue as he faces new rounds of questions about his business career and continued reluctance to provide more than two years of tax returns.

He may be shifting his focus and delivery, but his broad message has not changed over the last year. He has consistently focused on the economy and his record in the private sector. And while he periodically attacked his Republican opponents on the campaign trail, he usually saved his most heated criticism for Obama.

A memo released by campaign manager Matt Rhoades late last week suggests he'll continue that tack.

"We now know that only one campaign is going to run on President Obama's record of the past three-and-a-half years in office ? and it's not the Obama campaign," Rhoades wrote.

Regardless of his specific message, however, Romney's delivery at times can seem stiff, even to supporters. He speaks with the measured tone of a former business executive, methodically scanning the audience from side to side. The Otterbein crowd greeted him with a standing ovation but wasn't inspired to interrupt him again with applause until 27 minutes into the speech.

And he struggled to hold the younger crowd's attention at times.

The Romney campaign is confident that general election voters will ultimately warm to Romney's style as they get to know him better, particularly with the help of his wife, Ann.

"I think America's going to fall in love with Ann Romney," said senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom, who last month suggested Romney would handle the transition to the general election like an Etch A Sketch. "I think they're going to fall in love with Mitt Romney and the entire family.

Is this RIM's BlackBerry 10 development device?

Image

You know the drill -- grab yourself a spoonful of Morton's and get ready for another supposed leak of a gadget. This time around, you're looking at what's claimed as being one of Research In Motion's BlackBerry 10 "Development Alpha" devices that'll be handed out during next week's BlackBerry Jam -- just like the company promised a month ago. Images of the device first surfaced over at CrackBerry's forums and, as the site points out, the touchscreen candy bar seems to share its design DNA with the PlayBook. Keeping in mind that it's likely to remain a testing device for devs, don't bank on it ever hitting store shelves. That said, we're now curious how pivotal a role RIM's famous tactile keyboards will play on its next-generation phones -- if any. Head over to the source links below if you'd like to catch more photos from Mr. Blurrycam and extra information in the meantime.
